The Prayer of Invocation

The Prelude

§ The Call to Worship
Isaiah 55:1, 3; John 6:55; 7:37
Leader: Come, everyone who thirsts, Come without money and without price. Incline your ear, and come to Me, hear that your soul may live.
People: For His flesh is true food and His blood is true drink. For on the last day of the great feast, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink."

§ The Prayer of Adoration and Confession (Unison)
Our Father, who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil;
For Yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

The Assurance of Pardon
2 Corinthians 5:21
For our sake He made Him to be sin Who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

§ The Confession of Faith
Heidelberg Catechism  Question #99-100
Leader: What is the aim of the third commandment?
People: That we neither blaspheme nor misuse the Name of God by cursing, perjury, or unnecessary oaths, nor share in such horrible sins by being silent bystanders. In summary, we should use the holy Name of God only with reverence and awe, so that we may properly confess God, pray to God, and glorify God in all our words and works.

Leader: Is blasphemy of God’s name by swearing and cursing really such serious sin that God is angry also with those who do not do all they can to help prevent and forbid it?
People: Yes, indeed. No sin is greater or provokes God’s Wrath more than blaspheming His Name. That is why God commanded it to be punished with death.
