The Prayer of Confession

The Assurance of Pardon
Psalm 103:8-12
The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will He keep His anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us.

§ The Confession of Faith
Heidelberg Catechism Question #101-102
Leader: But may we swear an oath in God’s Name if we do it reverently?
People: Yes, when the government demands it, or when necessity requires it, in order to maintain and promote truth and trustworthiness for God’s Glory and our neighbor’s good. Such oaths are grounded in God’s Word and were rightly used by the people of God in the Old and New Testaments.

Leader: May we also swear by saints or other creatures?
People: No. A legitimate oath means calling upon God as the only One Who knows my heart to witness to my truthfulness and to punish me if I swear falsely. No creature is worthy of such honor.
